How to Pack Fragile Items for a Move | Step-by-Step Guide
Professional packing tips for fragile items before a Melbourne move. How to wrap glasses, artwork, TVs, electronics and antiques safely.
Key principle: Every fragile item should be individually wrapped, tightly packed with no movement inside the box, clearly labelled, and carried in a separate fragile box — never mixed with heavy items.
Essential Packing Materials
- Bubble wrap — best for glassware, ornaments and electronics
- Packing paper / newspaper — fill gaps and wrap non-delicate surfaces
- Double-walled boxes — stronger than single-wall for heavy fragile items
- Foam peanuts — cushioning filler for spaces in boxes
- Packing tape — reinforce box bottoms thoroughly
- Stretch wrap / cling film — wrap around drawers and glass panels
- Clothing and towels — great free padding for kitchenware
Packing Glassware and Crockery
Glasses should be stuffed internally with crumpled packing paper, then wrapped individually in bubble wrap, then placed upright (never stacked flat) in a divided box. Plates should be wrapped individually and packed vertically, like records — plates packed flat are far more likely to break in transit. Line the box bottom with 5–8cm of foam or scrunched paper.
Packing Artwork and Mirrors
Large artwork and mirrors need custom protection. Use corner protectors, wrap in bubble wrap, and ideally use a picture box sized to fit. Never place artwork flat under other boxes. Mark clearly: "FRAGILE — ARTWORK — DO NOT STACK". If pieces are irreplaceable, consider professional art packing or crating.
Packing TVs and Electronics
Use the original box if possible — it's the best fit. Otherwise, wrap screens in anti-static bubble wrap, stand TVs upright (never flat), and clearly mark as fragile. Remove and pack cables separately in labelled zip-lock bags. Back up computers and important data before the move.
Packing Antiques and Valuables
For high-value or irreplaceable items, consider having your removalist provide professional packing or using a specialist art/antique packer. For insurance purposes, photograph all valuables before packing and ensure your removal company's transit insurance covers their replacement value.
Box Labelling System
- Write "FRAGILE" in red on all four sides AND the top
- Add "THIS SIDE UP" with an arrow
- Note the destination room
- Number boxes and keep a simple spreadsheet of contents
